What is a Mastermind Group Hot Seat?

The hot seat is the core of the mastermind model. In order to understand the mastermind read the following article we wrote. It is a 20-25 min focused round of peer-to-peer coaching by like-minded people (entrepreneurs). You are in the spotlight. The tribe is there to help you.

The purpose of the hot seat is to help you achieve your goals (in line with your core values, mission and vision) and install accountability. When you are in the hot seat you receive the undivided attention of the group. The hot seat is used to look at what is working in your business and what is not. Therefore you are asked to look deeply inside yourself. You are invited to be open and honest about where you are stuck and where you need help with. After your introduction, your fellow members will ask questions, make comments and share their own experiences and resources that will help you forward.

What is a Mastermind Group Hot Seat NOT?

The mastermind hot seat cannot be compared with anything else in life. It is not meant as a networking opportunity, nor is it meant to work together on a business. It is not your average meeting. It is something totally unique. The hot seat is not meant for small talk – it is for the contrary actually, nor is it a moment to talk about what happens outside of your world (i.e. things in the news) and nor a moment to complain and wine about the dramas in your life. It’s to help you to focus and get into motion in the direction that aligns with the call of your heart.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Hot Seat

You are the director of the conversation when you sit in the hot seat. Be selfish. Come take what you need the most. The group is there to give it to you. You will be amazed by the effect of this unusual dynamic.

Where in life do you get to be totally selfish to have your needs met instantaneously? When do you get to decide who speaks and who does not? When do you get to have a whole group of experienced like-minded entrepreneurs who are fully at your service? 

Dare to show yourself and use the group wisely. You start your hot seat with your ‘Ultimate Question’ and then give a short context of the situation (max 5 mins). You then tell the group how you want to be helped. What is your desired outcome of the hot seat? Be clear and concise. After that your tribe members ask question and give advice. Sometimes the members desire to help each other also after the meeting, for short periods of time (max. 30 mins to 1 hour). This can mean exchange of skills, coaching and exchange of network.

In the end, the best way to get the most out of your hot seat is to come well prepared and to be completely selfish.

Which Hot Seat Question Should I Ask?

To prepare you fill out the template of the preparation form and upload at the latest 48 hrs before the meeting. Your buddies read this form and can comment and ask questions online to help you further clarify your needs for the hot seat.  The template we use contains and is not limited to the following:

  • What were my goals and are they still clear enough?
  • What did you do, what was the effect and what did you learn?
  • What were your obstacles and what is still present now?
  • Which other things do you need help, advice or expertise with?

What are the Results of the Hot Seat?

What Napoleon Hill originally wrote about the mastermind and the hot seat is true. The whole becomes bigger than the sum of its individual parts. Together with your tribe you will achieve breakthrough moments that you cannot achieve on your own, or with a 1-on-1 coach. Within the hot seat you will peel of the layers of the onion of your challenges.

As a result you will grow with more ease and along the way you’ll discover that others face similar challenges. You will feel more connected and supported on your journey. You will feel part of the tribe.
